The PTO

The Academy Charter School PTO is an organization formed by concerned parents and guardians of students attending The Academy Charter School (TACS).

What is the PTO?

The Academy Charter School PTO are volunteers partner with school administrators, teachers and staff to promote the welfare of our scholars. Our involvement helps to foster an environment where our scholars can thrive and reach their full potential. Our goal is to ensure that our scholars receive the best education and character development. The TACS PTO also serves as a conduit between all interested parties to communicate relevant information and concerns between parents, school administrators, teachers and staff.

Why does the PTO have fundraisers?

The Academy Charter School PTO is an organization administered by an all volunteer board and it does not receive funding from any outside source. All activities conducted by the PTO are funded by the resources collected through fundraising.

What does the PTO do with the money collected through fundraising?

All funds collected go toward activities for our scholars. The school’s Business Manager conducts a yearly audit of TACS PTO books to ensure that the funds are being used for its intended purpose. Some of these activities include, but are not limited to, providing weekly planners for all grades above Kindergarten; hosting Halloween, Holiday and Valentine’s Day parties; Holiday Breakfast with Santa and book gift distribution; Thanksgiving baskets for TACS families in need; winter coat distribution to Big Brother Big Sister; gift wrap and scotch tape distribution to the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence; providing Common Core incentives for the most improved students; helping to fund the Common Core Prep rally; providing a full uniform scholarship to the top boy and girl 5th grade graduate; purchasing the Kindergarten graduation gowns; hosting an Annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon during Teacher’s Appreciation week; providing the entertainment for the Annual School Picnic and many more.

Why is there only one PTO for the Elementary and Middle Schools?

Currently, there is one TACS PTO serving both the Elementary and Middle Schools. One of the main reasons that there is only one TACS PTO is the lack of parental involvement. TACS PTO is open to the concept of having two organizations, each serving one school. However, active parent participation is needed to effectuate this goal.

How do I become a member of the PTO and join one of the committees?

All families with students attending TACS can become a member in good standing by paying the annual prorated PTO dues. A member in good standing can then volunteer to join one of five committees. The Committees from which to choose are Events, Fundraising, Multicultural Diversity, Constitution and By-laws and Nominating.
